Indian naval crew has rescued more than 192 people in cyclone-hit Mozambique In response to a request from Mozambique, India immediately diverted three naval ships to the port city of Beira, a Ministry of External Affairs statement said. As part of its relief operations in cyclone-hit  Mozambique,  the Indian Navy has rescued more than 192 people and provided assistance to 1,381 people in medical camps set up by it, a statement said. Cyclone Idai made landfall in East and Southern Africa around March 15 causing widespread destruction and loss of human lives in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi.  Read more here

Statue for Wales' first black headteacher Betty Campbell A statue will be placed in Cardiff to immortalise Wales' first black headteacher Betty Campbell after she topped a Hidden Heroines vote. Mrs Campbell proved wrong those who told her as a pupil her dream job was "insurmountable" in post-war Britain. The school she led became a template around the UK for good multicultural education and Nelson Mandela sought her out on his only visit to Wales. She was chosen by the thousands of people who  voted in the BBC Wales poll . The statue will be placed in the plaza of Central Square, by the BBC Wales' new headquarters, and her face was projected on to the side of the building on Friday to mark the announcement.

Islamic State group: Syria's Kurds call for international tribunal The Kurdish-led administration in northern Syria has called for the creation of an international tribunal to try thousands of suspected members of the Islamic State (IS) group. One official, Abdul Karim Omar, told the BBC they were struggling to cope with the thousands who emerged from the last IS enclave of Baghuz, in the east. Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) captured the village last week. About 1,000 foreign fighters are among the thousands held by Kurds in prisons. The US-backed SDF forces have reportedly captured more than 5,000 militants - from Syria and abroad - since January and put them in detention centres, while women and children are kept in camps for the displaced. According to one Kurdish official speaking to AFP news agency, more than 9,000 foreign relatives of IS members - many of them children - are being held at the Kurdish-run al-Hol camp. Ilhan Omar told Muslims in attendance to “raise hell” and challenge discrimination against Muslims at school, in the workplace, and in the healthcare system. And conservatives were totally cool with this idea, not making any fuss whatsoever over Omar—whom they’ve  constantly attacked with allegations of anti-Semitism  since she took office two months ago—encouraging other Muslims to stand up for themselves in the face of hate! Stolen Picasso portrait of Dora Maar found after 20 years A Dutchman known as the "Indiana Jones of the art world" has found a Picasso painting that was stolen 20 years ago. Arthur Brand says the portrait was circulated in the Dutch criminal underworld for years after it was taken from a Saudi sheikh's yacht in 1999. Buste de Femme (Dora Maar) was first painted in 1938, and is now thought to be worth €25m (£21m; $28m). Dora Maar was Pablo Picasso's lover and muse for seven years. The painting hung in his home until his death in 1973. Mr Brand hit headlines last year after  tracking down a Byzantine mosaic of Saint Mark . It had been taken from a church in Cyprus in the 1970s. Mexico demands apology from Spain and the Vatican over conquest The Mexican president has sent a letter to Spain's King Felipe VI and Pope Francis urging them to apologise for human rights abuses committed during the conquest of the region. Andrés Manuel López Obrador said the indigenous peoples of Mexico had been the victims of massacres. Speaking in the ruins of an ancient Mexican city, he called for a full account of the abuses. Spain rejected the call and called for a "constructive perspective" instead. 'Brother nations' Mr López Obrador was unsparing in his criticism of both Spain and the Vatican, saying: "The time has come to reconcile. But let us ask forgiveness first." Ethiopian Airlines 'believes in Boeing' The boss of Ethiopian Airlines said he still "believes in Boeing" in spite of a crash involving the US firm's 737 Max plane which killed 157 people. Tewolde Gebremariam said: "Despite the tragedy, Boeing and Ethiopian Airlines will continue to be linked well into the future." Separately, Mr Gebremariam also said the aircraft's anti-stall system was triggered prior to the disaster. The feature was found to be an issue in another crash of the Boeing's 737 Max. In a statement  outlining the close ties between the Ethiopian and US airline industries , Mr Gebremariam said: "Let me be clear: Ethiopian Airlines believes in Boeing. Stuart Campbell, who runs the blog Wings Over Scotland, is suing the MSP for £25,000 after she criticised him in a newspaper column. The dispute stems from a piece written by Ms Dugdale in the Daily Record. Mr Campbell appeared as the first witness in the defamation case at Edinburgh Sheriff court on Monday His remarks were posted on his Twitter feed on 3 March 2017 as he was live-tweeting about the Scottish Conservative conference. Pro-Scottish independence campaigner Mr Campbell wrote: "Oliver Mundell is the sort of public speaker that makes you wish his dad had embraced his homosexuality sooner."

Estonia warns anglers off thin ice Estonian officials have caught dozens of anglers fishing through holes cut in the ice of frozen lakes, despite the start of the spring thaw. Estonia prohibits fishing on lakes from a certain date each year, because of the danger of injury or death if anyone should fall through the thinning ice. The cut-off this year fell yesterday, and rescue patrols have as usual found far too many keen anglers enjoying their hobby, oblivious to the risks they are running, Estonia's  ERR public broadcaster  reports. But this year the Rescue Board is flexing its muscles, warning fishermen that it will call in the police and border guards if they don't quit the ice. Refusal to comply can lead to fines. The Disney-Fox giant in five charts Disney is now the official owner of Rupert Murdoch's former entertainment empire, 21st-First Century Fox. The mammoth $71bn deal - completed on Wednesday - brings the likes of X-Men, The Simpsons and Fantastic Four characters to Disney's already impressive film catalogue which includes Star Wars and Cinderella. Disney now also owns the Fox film and TV studios, National Geographic and Indian TV giant Star India. Ultimately, its aim is to compete with rivals Netflix and Amazon. Why are nets appearing over trees and hedges? It's finally spring, the time of year when the flowers bloom, the sun is out for longer and birds are nesting. But nesting is not being made easy in many parts of England, with increased reports of developers covering hedges and trees with netting. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) says developers do this to make it easier for them to remove greenery when the time comes, as although it's an offence to destroy an active nest, there are no laws to prevent the installation of nets to stop birds nesting in the first place. One of several high-profile figures to condemn the practice is naturalist and broadcaster Chris Packham, who has described it as "ghastly" and the " antithesis of everything conservation stands for ". The RSPB - which says the UK has lost more than 40 million birds in the past 50 years - has now asked the government to address this issue. Read more

Kenyan science teacher Peter Tabichi wins global prize A science teacher from rural Kenya, who gives away most of his salary to support poorer pupils, has won a $1m prize (£760,000) for the world's best teacher. Peter Tabichi, a member of the Franciscan religious order, won the 2019 Global Teacher Prize. Brother Peter has been praised for his achievements in a deprived school with crowded classes and few text books. He wants pupils to see "science is the way to go" for their futures. Detailed images of baby heart inside the womb Researchers have produced unprecedented images of a baby's heart while it is still inside the womb. Pregnant women were scanned in an MRI machine and powerful computers built 3D models of the tiny beating hearts inside their unborn children. The team at King's College London and Guy's and St Thomas's says it will improve the care of babies with congenital heart disease. Huge fossil discovery made in China's Hubei province Scientists say they have discovered a "stunning" trove of thousands of fossils on a river bank in China. The fossils are estimated to be about 518 million years old, and are particularly unusual because the soft body tissue of many creatures, including their skin, eyes, and internal organs, have been "exquisitely" well preserved. Palaeontologists have called the findings "mind-blowing" - especially because more than half the fossils are previously undiscovered species. The fossils, known as the Qingjiang biota, were collected near Danshui river in Hubei province. Read more here

Norway cruise ship evacuated after engine problems Rescuers have airlifted hundreds of people stranded on a cruise ship off the west coast of Norway. The Viking Sky lost power on Saturday and sent out a distress signal after it began drifting towards land. It got into trouble in a notoriously difficult stretch of waters and was reportedly minutes from striking rocks. The vessel has since restarted three of its four engines and is moving towards the nearest port with the assistance of tugboats. So far, almost 500 of the 1,373 passengers have been airlifted off the ship. Most of those on board are said to be British or US citizens. See more

Resolution on environmental human rights defenders adopted in the UN Human Rights Council A Norwegian-led resolution on environmental human rights defenders was adopted by consensus in the UN Human Rights Council yesterday. - I am very pleased that we have succeeded in reaching agreement on a strongly worded text, in such a complex area, said Foreign Affairs Ine Eriksen Søreide. For 20 years, Norway has led the work on the annual resolution on human rights defenders. This year's Human Rights Council recognizes the important role played by human rights defenders in promoting the protection of the environment and building and safeguarding sustainable, open and democratic societies, said Ms Eriksen Søreide.
