US deports Indian migrants using military plane amid Trump’s crackdown

According to a US official who talked to Reuters on Monday, a US military plane carrying Indian migrants has left for India, the first deportation of its kind since President Donald Trump took office again.

According to Reuters, the official verified that a C-17 military plane carrying Indian migrants had set off and was scheduled to reach India in a day.

The US increases its military involvement in deportations By sending more troops to the US-Mexico border, housing migrants in military facilities, and using military aircraft for deportations, the US military has become more active in immigration enforcement under Trump's administration.

Prior deportation flights have taken migrants to Honduras, Guatemala, and Peru, according to Reuters. But since Trump returned to power, this is the first time India has been a part of the military expulsion program.

Speaking with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have expressed worries over illegal immigration from India.

Trump said he expects India to "do what is right" in allowing the return of undocumented Indian migrants, referring to his discussions with Modi.

The two leaders' chat was characterised by the White House as "productive," emphasising talks on how to "expand and deepen" US-India collaboration.

Jaishankar reaffirmed that India opposes unlawful migration when Rubio brought up the subject of "irregular immigration." Illegal immigration and other illegal activities are frequently connected. It is not good for our reputation, nor is it desirable.

We are open to their legitimate return to India if any of our nationals are discovered to be in the US illegally and we are able to confirm their citizenship," Jaishankar said.

Costs of deportation and India's reaction The cost of military deportation flights is substantially higher than that of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) planes. According to Reuters, the cost of one military deportation flight to Guatemala last week was approximately $4,675 per Migrant.
