With folded hands, he pleaded with his colleagues to take action after a gunman shot dead 19 children and two teachers at a Texas school. He asked, "What are we doing? There were more mass shootings than days in the year. Our kids are living in fear."
"I am here on this floor to beg, to literally get down on my hands and knees and beg my colleagues to find a path forward here, to work with us and find a way to pass laws that make this less likely," he appealed.
